Step by Step...

So, we've had a few very eventful few days, and thought we'd fill you all in. On Sunday we were getting ready to go to Whit's parent's house to watch the Super Bowl. Whitney was downstairs and I was coming down the stairs with Nina in my arms when I slipped and we both fell down a few steps. Nina seemed alright at first, and we gently moved all of her joints to make sure she was fine. She cried but didn't flinch so we strapped her in her car seat and headed off to the Wheadons to watch the game. She was calm the whole way, but once we got there and took her out she was acting a little strange. She was crying a lot and not moving, which is very strange if you know her personality. So, we decided to take her into the emergency room only 5 minutes after arriving.

Once we were at the ER, Whitney decided to feel Nina's joints once more. We noticed that every time that we touched Nina's left leg, her entire body would jump. The doctor came in, expressed concern with the leg, and ordered an X-ray. We gently brought her over to get examined, and the X-ray technician took over. Once the first image was taken, the technician came out and asked us what happened. We told her the story and she said "Oh, that makes sense." She told us that she normally likes to take images from 2 angles, but she didn't want to move Nina. We asked her is she was seeing anything, and her eyes grew very large as she slowly shook her head yes. That didn't make us feel too comfortable, and so I asked if her femur was broken. She told me shook her head yes, but told me that she wasn't allowed to diagnose anything. She told me and Whitney to come over to see the image on the monitor, and this is what we saw...

As you can see, Nina's femur is completely severed. The technician at the ER put on a splint and an ace bandage which was meant to immobilize her leg. The sent us home with Lortab and the splint, with instructions to call an orthopedic surgeon to schedule an appointment for a cast. As you can see from the picture below, the splint did not do too much to relieve Nina from her pain. (I HATE this picture because she looks so sad...)

We had Nina sleep in our room on Sunday night, and she woke up more than a few times due to the pain. She has always flinched in her sleep, which was causing her tons of pain since the splint was not really immobilizing her leg. We didn't really feel like letting the leg sit in the splint for 3 days was a good idea, so we called up to Primary Children's Hospital. They told us they wanted to see her that afternoon, so we packed her in the car and drove up to Salt Lake. Nina had a great experience there... they even put her in a wagon instead of a hospital bed!

Here Nina is off with the Anaesthesiologist. They put her under so they could more easily fit her with her cast. The fitted her with a Spica cast, and of course Whitney insisted that she got a bright pink cast. As you can see from the pictures below, a Spica cast goes from the mid stomach all the way down both legs, and it has a bar in between the legs to completely immobilize her lower body.

And here Nina is with her brand new cast. She still is a little under the anaesthesia...
waking up...

There is a hole in the bottom of the cast for a diaper, and the nurses were nice enough to put moleskin on all of the edges to save Nina's bum from any cuts or rashes.

After a long day at the hospital, no one was more ready to go home than Nina. Look at her face... you can almost hear her saying "Seriously... did that REALLY just happen? Am I REALLY wearing a pink cast on my entire lower body??"

My favorite part about this next picture is the hospital tag that the doctor put on the crossbar.

The doctor is going to bring Nina back in early next week to ensure that the bone is still correctly set. He's saying the cast could be on for 4-6 weeks, but that she will be completely fine. Thank heavens for good doctors. As you all can probably imagine, we were complete wrecks when they told us what happened. Although she won't be able to continue crawling and scooting around the house, we're so grateful that she is going to be OK. The moment we got her home last night she started being herself again, and her happy personality started to come back. Today she has been so happy and even playful even with her big cast. It's probably mainly from the drugs, but hey... with a broken femur we'll take the happy moments however they come.

So, that's what has been going on the past few days in our world. I know the pink cast looks stylish, but PLEASE... be careful with your kids on the stairs. The emotional pain you feel is NOT worth it. We're just so relieved that she is going to be just fine, and even with a Spica cast... isn't she cute?

I got a little teary reading this post too, and I already knew how it all turned out! We love Nina and hope she's feeling better soon. And we just can't help thinking that if you tied a little skateboard or some wheels to Nina's cast, she could still use her hands and wheel herself all over the place ;-)

That is so sad. She's definitely a trooper.

Good to hear that everything should heal just fine and she'll be back to her regular self in 4-6 weeks. I hope the time goes by fast. She's such a sweet girl, I hope she's patient with the cast. I got a little teary eyed too looking at Nina's sad face. Kids are just so innocent.

I think you guys are all such troopers. What a scary time for all of you, but how wonderful that everything is okay! And I agree with everyone else that Nina is still such a doll with her bright pink cast on! (Good choice, Whitney!)

De Groot family,
I'm a friend of Mandy's (and I remember you from when I worked in the Wymount office). I'm so sorry to hear about your little girl, it breaks my heart to think of what she had to go through. I'm glad that she has a cast to stabilize the break and parents that are so concerned. Is putting her in the car seat or stroller a challenge? Poor baby.

Oh, Billy. That's so sad. I'm glad that she's doing well and the cast totally cracks me up. What's best is that you can see her cute, chunky thighs on the x-ray. Please let us know if we can do anything to help out. I imagine Whitney's getting backaches carrying Nina around with that cast.

Hey guys I just wanted to tell you we have been thinking of you all and every night when we say Evan's prayers he now includes a special request that Nina heals extra fast! Nice move with the hot pink cast, Whitney, I love it! :) We hope things have settled down now for you guys and that these weeks in the cast go by in a blink. Lots of love -

Oh my heck! Whitney and Billy I really can't imagine what it would be like to have something like this happen! I am glad to hear that she is doing alright and what a little trooper. She is such a doll and seriously the cast is just too cute. I can't believe that it has to cover the whole bottom half of her body?! Crazy! Oh, you guys will be in my thoughts and prayers. What a crazy bit of business to have to take care of a little one with a cast. Lot of love!

Whitney, you barely even know me, but I just read your story (via Mandy)...and I CAN'T believe what I read. I am so sorry that happened! Your poor little baby! I'm so glad she's going to be okay. I'm sure she'll recover completely and everything will be fine. I still can't believe that happened. That could have happened to anyone one of us carrying a little babe in arms. That is so sad. I'll say a little prayer for you.

Awww! When I heard what happened from my mom, I just started crying and couldn't stop, and still can't keep the tears in each time I read and think about it. I just feel so very bad for you all. And it's hard for me to even imagine and I keep thinking about my little one and that happening to her. I'm so sorry you've had to experience this but I'm so, so thankful that it wasn't worse and that Nina doesn't have to be in pain anymore. What a precious little girl...I need to see you guys again and see how Nina has grown. How are things going with having to adapt to a cast? I hope that she has a fast recovery because nothing should keep a little cruiser immobile!

Whitney--this is Lindsay Geilman (Hesterly)--after checking my blog, Melissa told me to check your blog about your sweet little girl. Our little baby girl just fell down some stairs a few weeks ago and broke her wrist. So we are doing the whole cast thing too. She was climbing up the stairs and just fell down about 4 of them--with me right there. I just couldn't get to her in time! I felt so bad about it. Thanks heavens for good doctors! Anyways, my blog is private, but if you want an invite, send me an email at geilmans@gmail.com
take care and I hope she heals quickly and well! She sure is a cutie.

OH NO! Poor little Nina! I am so sorry for her (and you guys!) that this happened! I'm so glad to hear that she's going to be alright though!
She is definitely Whitney's daughter though -- smiling even though she's in a giant cast!
I'll be thinking about you guys, love ya!

Wow... the x-ray pictures caused ME pain!:( Poor thing - I'm glad she's going to be okay! Here's one for the memory book!:P

AHhhh.....I'm glad she's ok. That must have been so scary for you both. Kenzie fell this past summer and her elbow was dislocated :-( (nothing as scary as a broken femur though) and it took the doc. 10 times before they popped it back into place. I know how hard it is to watch your child in pain. :-( I'm sure everything will be ok.

I'm sure this might not be what you are thinking about right now, but this is the truth, background story: my little brother broke his femur when he was almost two, and was put into a smiliar cast, for six weeks. Well when they cast him, the nurse told my mom that when they take these casts off they usually will take them off outside becasue they smell so badly from the opening around the bum area. So my mom not wanting to expose her two year old(who broke his leg right around this time of year, I think it was feb 6 that he did it.) would take a diaper and cut in in half and tuck it up under the cast on both thr front and back sides and then place a diaper on the regular way. When they got to the 6 week checkup, the nurses commented that it was the cleanest cast of that kind they had ever seen, and he didn't have to have it taken off outside. She also jerry-rigged a baby walker so that she could slip him in and then snap the seat around and through the cast so that he could be more upright. I hope this helps. If you have any questions about the jerry-rigging or diapers, give me a call, seriously, 8019213960.

OH my goodness. I am so glad she is okay, but I also know the stress of having a baby with something strange on him/her-- Jordan's helmet. I will keep little Nina in my prayers.

So we totally saw you guys at the ER and I over heard the nurses talking about what had happened, about this poor dad who fell down the stairs with his baby and broke her leg, and then there you were coming out the doors, I knew that it must have been you guys since NO ONE else was in the entire hospital it seemed like! Good luck with everything!

Billie and Whitney, I am so sorry about little Nina. This is one of the hardest things to get through as a parent, seeing your child in pain and not being able to "make it all better" now. We too have a love for PCMC. When we were doing our residency at LDS hospital, Kirk accidently backed over our 23month old son coming home from the hospital one night. Just a freak accident so Billie, Kirk knows just excatly how you feel. Happily PCMC wasn't far away and they saved his life. Life is never the same when your baby gets hurt. We miss you and think about you all alot. Much love, Sister Anderson~
